Africa Project Update

It’s May, and for our community in Kantolomba that means our girls are back in school after their first holiday break.

At this point of the year, routines are more settled and things have “quieted down” compared to the intense flurry of activity at the beginning of the year, when school assignments are being finalized and everyone is getting ready for the year.

So in preparing to write this month’s article, I sat and stared at the computer screen for a very long time.  What am I going to write about?  You need to have something important to say.  Has something big happened recently?  What can I highlight?  Things are happening, but is there anything “major” or “really important” I can share?  You can’t just state that things are going well, people are happy and healthy and our girls are doing well.

It was that last thought that jolted me back to the present!  What a neat little bamboozle ego-centric karmic conditioning/self-hate had gotten me with.

I actually can say just that!

  • Theresa is doing well and her health is good.  She and Veronica are checking their blood pressure every day!
  • Memory is having a wonderful time at her teaching college and bringing back lots of helpful lessons, tips and tricks for the other teachers.
  • Edna, who started in grade 1 at Twabo this year, got the highest marks out of all the grade 1 girls!
  • Our nursing school girls are heading off for their rotations at clinics soon.  Two of them might even be placed locally!
  • 1,000 children are being fed every day and have access to clean water as well as a safe, joyous space to come to.
