Africa Project Update

Many years ago, when we first started discussing the girls program, we shared with the teachers this image of a mama hen pecking at an egg from the outside to help the baby chick out. We all recognized that the mama was not the only heroine… the baby chick was an equal participant, pecking back from the inside, wanting to get out.

Recently, some Grade 10 and  Grade 11 girls were talking to each other about their different schools, classrooms, lessons, and teachers.  We found out that after the conversation, the Grade 11 girls went home and told their parents that they believed they could receive a better education at this other school and wanted to transfer there.  It would mean an increase in school fees, and the parents would need to pay for that.  Wonder of wonders, the parents agreed.

On a recent Saturday, they came to Theresa and explained why they wanted to do this, that they already had spoken with their parents and had decided for themselves they wanted this change.  They didn’t want to wait until Grade 12 to go to this school; they wanted to start right away.

Wow.

Our girls are pecking back fiercely, with determination and motivation, and what a joy it is to watch!
