Everything Is the Buddha

There is a lovely old church bench that lives on the porch outside of the Meditation Hall.  Retreatants and monks sit there to view the courtyard, change their shoes, or eat a meal.  Over its many years of loving service, the bench has accumulated a layer of dirt and grime that has darkened her rich wood color.    With water, rags, a little Murphy’s Oil Soap, and hours of compassionate cleaning, monks and visiting monks are aiding in its beautiful transformation.

When we recognize that Everything is the Buddha, caring for the church bench is as important as tending the garden or feeding the animals or even caring for our own bodies.   We care for the bench as much as for those who will be sitting on it.  We experience the place of non-separation and oneness with all things through showing compassionate care in this way.

The next time you’re visiting the Monastery, be sure and notice the joyful bench ready to be at your service!
