Africa Project Update

The 2020 exam results are just in. Many of the girls in our Girls Program did well, passing their exams and moving to a new grade.  I’d like to share a story about two of them, Mary B. and Mary M., the two Marys as we call them!

When the two Marys were about to go into grade 11 a couple of years ago, they realized that the school they attended wasn’t very good. There were 120 kids in each class.  They couldn’t ask questions.  The teachers would write information on the board and leave the classroom.

They noticed that their friends, who were at a different school, were getting a better education. So they advocated for themselves, first with their parents and then with Theresa.  Within a short time, they were able to transfer to a new school.  A few months in, Theresa shared that the new school was already making a difference, as their test scores were very much improved.

Last year, they moved to grade 12 in the new school.  In December, they sat for their exams.  Two weeks ago, the results came in, and they passed!

We often talk about the image of a Mother Hen and a baby chick in an egg.  The Mother Hen pecks at the shell from the outside to help the egg hatch, and the baby chick pecks back to break through the shell.  Two years ago, these two girls pecked at their shells, and now, they will be moving on to college.  Wow.

This year, we have eight, yes EIGHT, girls entering grade 12, our biggest group of girls to move forward to grade 12 yet.

I can’t wait to report back on what happens with these girls a year from now.
