Africa Project Update

Have you joined the High Five Challenge?

Daily practice commitments are one of my favorite forms of love; they express love for the human, for practice, and for all of Life.  10,000 steps a day, meditation, drinking plenty of water, acts of kindness—all are examples of daily practices.  So when it came time to choose five things to train with, to celebrate with, for the months of August and September, it was easy!

It occurred to me that I would like one of the five to be something that is particular to loving our team in Kantolomba. When talking with Theresa about the charts they are keeping for one of their commitments—learning new English words every day—it dropped in, “Yes, me too!” I want to learn a new Bemba word each day of the campaign!

And what a beautiful practice it is.  Wake up each morning and notice where the attention lights and feels the quiver of love: the big, open window right by my bed I get to look out of as soon as I open my eyes—window: imbwa.  Next morning I look out the window and see the tiny sliver of slightly red sun peeking over the horizon—sun: akasuba.  I look down and see an adorable dog (I often ask her how it is that I get to live with the best dog on the planet?!)—dog: mbwa.

We often say in practice that attention is love.  Attention: kutika;  Love: ichitemwiko.

There are always huge smiles when we visit Kantolomba and are able to use a growing number of Bemba words and phrases. It’s a small, tangible way to express the deep love and respect for an amazing group of humans.

Tell us about your High Five Challenge commitment.
