“Ukuteya Amatwi kumwinshi wa Living Compassion,” said a woman from the Kantolomba community to Theresa as she fetched clean water for her household from the Living Compassion well. It translates to: “We have a listening ear to the door of Living Compassion.”
This woman has a daughter in grade three. Of course, her daughter is not in school; no one is in school. Her neighbor is the mother of a grade-two student in the Living Compassion Girls Program. She had seen this neighbor and her daughter going over some lessons on paper. Where did they get that? “Living Compassion,” responded her neighbor.
The inspiring story that ensued is featured on the August 11 Good News Update.
Among the many things I love about the story is how it illustrates the leadership of the Living Compassion team. We have our listening ear to the door of Living Compassion -- what a lovely phrase! This woman went on to explain to Theresa that as the pandemic unfolds, everyone in the community is talking of how Living Compassion is approaching things. “What are they doing now? What now? What now?” They are watching the team, learning, emulating. No one thought of getting educational materials for their children because no one has them even when their children ARE in school! The government schools don’t have the funds for children to have books or even copied material to bring home with them.
And the team is stepping up. Theresa has said she will not stop until every one of the 1,000 children in Living Compassion Kantolomba has access to educational materials.
Together we are committed to everyone in Kantolomba remaining safe, healthy, happy and learning in these very challenging times!
We will keep you up to date as we, too, keep our listening ear to the door of Living Compassion in Kantolomba!
